In a meeting between two of the hottest teams in the NCAA Tournament, Texas volleyball couldn’t cool off Wisconsin in an Elite Eight match Sunday at Gregory Gymnasium.

The third-seeded Badgers (28-4) knocked off No. 1 Texas (26-4) for their 13th consecutive win and a spot in the Final Four later this week in Kansas City, Mo. After the match, Texas credited Wisconsin for the victory but mourned the sudden end of the season.

“They served incredible, they hit incredible, blocked really well, passed really well,” said Texas libero Emma Halter, one of just two seniors on the team. “They just had an amazing game, and they played better than us, honestly.”

Star outside hitter Mimi Coyler had 23 kills to pace Wisconsin in the 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19 win, but she had plenty of help from Una Vajagic (15 kills), Carter Booth (11 kills) and setter Charlie Fuerbringer (57 assists). Texas had just one player reach double-figure kills in freshman Cari Spears, and the Longhorns hit a tournament-low .250 from the floor.

But after the match, Texas coach Jerritt Elliott focused more on the painful end of a successful season than such stats.

“We ran into, obviously, a buzz saw,” he said. “I thought they (Wisconsin) served extremely well. They kept us off-balance all night long, and we just really never found a really good rhythm tonight. They played really, really well, and that's what this tournament is all about.

“But it’s just been such a special year for me. Right now is the time just to hug one another. We literally had no team issues this year, and it was just so much fun and something to really build up on.”
