Gloucester Rugby transfer latest as deal done for former England scrum-half

Dan Robson is set to return to the club he started his professional career with

Gloucester Rugby have offered a homecoming to former scrum-half Dan Robson as the Gallagher PREM club have moved quickly to find a replacement to offset the impending departure of Tomos Williams.

Former England international Dan Robson, 33, is reported to have signed a two-year deal to return to Kingsholm, according to Telegraph Sport.

Williams, the Wales scrum-half who joined from Cardiff Rugby last season, is expected to soon be unveiled as a Saracens player ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. His exit is a major blow for the Cherry and Whites, with director of rugby George Skivington making the half-back the club captain in the summer.

Williams' debut season in the PREM was nothing short of sensational as he was named Premiership player of the season in 2024/25 and earned selection for the British and Irish Lions tour to Australia before having to fly home injured having looked on track to make the Test team.

Robson, who was capped 14 times by England under Eddie Jones, has spent the last four seasons playing in France after joining Pau when his former club, Wasps, collapsed financially in 2022. Robson made his Gloucester debut back in 2010, making 80 appearances before leaving the club in 2015 for Wasps.

The Cherry and Whites are understood to have great faith in the abilities of 26-year-old scrum-half Caolan Englefield, who featured for England A last month, injuring his shoulder. But the club were known to be shopping for additional cover at number nine with Williams turning down the contract offered to him, and are reported to have spoken to Ospreys scrum-half Kieran Hardy about a move across the border with the Welsh side' future uncertain following the WRU revealing plans to cut the regions down from four to three.

Gloucester have jumped on the instability in Welsh rugby to try and attack some of the regions' top talent, having already been branded 'The fifth region' with likes of Williams, Max Llewellyn, Josh Hathaway and Freddie Thomas already at the club.

The Cherry and Whites are widely reported to have landed deals for Wales captains Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake, to bolster the backrow and hooker ranks respectively.
